To Tell The Sacred Tale

Janet Ruffing, R.S.M.

Sunday 2nd August 2009

Stories are the connective tissue between culture and nature,

self and other, life and death that sew the worlds together

and in telling, the soul quickens and comes alive.

I would like to quote Mother Angelica’s advice for Lent as follows :

“Lent is a kind-of a springboard for personal repentance. We all need personal repentance for our daily faults, for our lukewarmness. Examine your conscience today so that for the rest of Lent you know what to repent for.  Ask the Lord for light to know yourself: “What is it Lord that You want me to do this Lent that will make me more like You on Easter? What do I lack that will make me more like You?” Then go for it, but go for it in a very gentle way.  The harder you work, the more you flop because you concentrate on the fault rather than on Jesus. If you get a little bit of self-knowledge for this Lent, you’ll be in great shape for the rest of your life.  You’ll make giant steps forward. But if all you think of is yourself, you’re going to be miserable. Look at Jesus. Look at Him with great, great love. Make a special effort to read the Passion and think of the humiliations of our Lord. What a terrible helplessness our Lord had in his fallings; the stripping of His garments must have been one of the most painful things. I’m sure a lot of it was for the immorality in the world. We have no idea what it cost Him. ” – Mother Mary Angelica

I Am The New Year

I am the new year. I am an unspoiled page in your book of time.

I am your next chance at the art of living.

I am your opportunity to practice what you have learned
about life during the last twelve months.

All that you sought and didn’t find is hidden in me,
waiting for you to search it out with more determination.

All the good that you tried for and didn’t achieve is mine
to grant when you have fewer conflicting desires.

All that you dreamed but didn’t dare to do,
all that you hoped but did not will,
all the faith that you claimed but did not have –
these slumber lightly, waiting to be awakened by
the touch of a strong purpose.

I am your opportunity to renew your allegiance
to Him who said, “Behold, I make all things new.”

I am the new year.
